Location: York Durham Aphasia Centre - York and Durham Region
Position: SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST – 12 MONTH CONTRACT Maternity Leave Full-time

Duties:
• Collect all relevant information and reports from client, family and other community agencies as appropriate
• Assess client communication needs (usually in clients’ home)
• Interpret and communicate the results of assessment such that clients understand their disability, program
             and service options
• Work with management to determine which program would be most appropriate given the clients’ needs
             and the resources and space in each program site
• Attend relevant meetings at and after client’s site visit until new client is well integrated into their chosen
             program
• Facilitate communication groups and skill sessions to maximize client participation
• Observe client’s communication needs in a group setting
• Facilitate mutual aid group process amongst clients
• Facilitate group goal setting where individual clients determine what communication goals and roles they will
             work on for a specified time period
• Train team leaders, volunteers and students to support client’s identified goals and roles within program
• Discuss and arrange other community supports and referrals as appropriate
• Ensure appropriate supportive communication and AAC techniques are utilized and provide training to other
             agency/facility staff where appropriate
• Met with team members to review observations on communication, behavior, and program participation as
             required
• Record notes of consultations/program modifications in client file
• Participate in public and outside agency education, advocacy, and on external committees as assigned, or
             as needed to assist clients with community integration

Qualifications:
• Graduate of a Masters Degree program in Speech-Language Pathology or educational equivalent
• Current registration with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario
             (CASLPO)
• 1-3 years of experience with adult neurogenic communication disorders
• Previous experience providing community-based services preferred
• Fluency in another language is an asset
• Proof of liability insurance required
• Sensitivity to issues/barriers experienced by adults with aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia and related acquired
             adult communication disabilities
• Knowledge of supportive communication techniques and AAC aids and techniques specific to adult
             neurogenic population, and ability to train others
• Knowledge of group work process, especially the mutual aid group format, and ability to train others
• Knowledge of “life participation” and social model approach to aphasia rehabilitation
• Knowledge of life review and life history approaches to group work, and ability to train others
• Strong case management, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
• Ability to maintain and submit accurate agency records and statistics
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team
• Must be willing and able to work offsite – a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required (travel
             required to various locations)

Salary Range:    $24.02 - $30.02
