March of Dimes Winner of 2012 Voluntary Sector Reporting Award
The Voluntary Sector Reporting Awards (VSRAs) is Ontario’s award program for best charity annual reports. On Friday, February 15th, 14 finalists competed in five categories for the chance to win a prize of $5,000.
This was the third year that March of Dimes Canada has been a finalist, and the first year the charity won the VRSA, in the category of National Charities headquartered in Ontario. The Annual Report consolidates the operations of Ontario March of Dimes and March of Dimes Canada.
“For five years, the awards program has been helping focus Ontario charities on showing more transparency and accountability in their annual reporting. This year we saw more than 100 nominations from charities of every size from all corners of the province,” said Steve Salterio, Director of the Chartered Accountants of Ontario (CA) Queen’s Centre for Governance, which organizes the VSRAs every year in partnership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) and PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC). The National Post newspaper is the VSRA national media sponsor.
March of Dimes was selected this year for its transparency in financial reporting and exemplary Management Discussion and Analysis. The analysis was commended not only for its clear review of the past year, but also for addressing any potential risks to March of Dimes’ operations. In addition, the Annual Report was lauded for providing a self-assessment with a grade assigned to each program area based on results as against pre-established annual goals.
“We’re thrilled to be the 2012 VRSA recipient in our category,” says Andria Spindel, President and CEO of Ontario March of Dimes/March of Dimes Canada. “We have incorporated feedback and suggestions from the previous VRSA reports and are pleased to see that our efforts resulted in a win this year.”
