LIFE Toronto Receives Vital Ideas Grant from the Toronto Community Foundation

March of Dimes Canada is one of 21 community organizations to receive a Toronto Community Foundation Vital Ideas grant

March of Dimes Canada is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the prestigious Vital Ideas grant from the Toronto Community Foundation. Through the grant program, community organizations are provided with up to $30,000 over one year to increase their capacity in order to expand their reach, share their experience, and better sustain their impact. Since the grant program was developed, the Community Foundation, its Fundholders, and corporate partners, such as KPMG, have funded close to $3.5 million to 136 community organizations.

Vital Ideas is one of three Toronto Community Foundation grant programs made possible through its Vital Toronto Fund, a strategic community endowment.  The grant program identifies high-impact organizations that build on successful methods of service delivery and continually adapt and innovate. Furthermore, the organizations work for social change by addressing the root causes of the trends identified in the Toronto’s Vital Signs® Report.

March of Dimes Canada will use the Vital Ideas grant to support its Learning Independence for Future Empowerment, or LIFE Program. LIFE Toronto is a combination of Life Skills Workshops, Outward Bound Canada programing, weekly Social Outings, and Conductive Education®. This program serves young people who have a disability and need assistance to transition into adulthood; be it in decision-making, community integration, accessing services, continuing education, or achieving set goals.

The program provides participants with a learning environment to expand their social and professional skills while practicing the daily responsibilities of adulthood. LIFE Toronto’s goal is to help the individual bridge the gap from using children’s services and supports to those for adults, by providing participants with new skills and resources.

“We are extremely proud to be recognized by the Toronto Community Foundation and awarded this prestigious grant,” says Mary Lynne Stewart, Director of Fund Development and Communications for March of Dimes Canada. “The participants in LIFE blossom as they realize new skills and take steps towards achieving greater independence. This grant will help us to offer new challenges and experiences,” she continues.

“Our support of March of Dimes Canada is the first step in a very important journey to wider community impact,” said Toronto Community Foundation’s President & CEO Rahul K. Bhardwaj. “We are pleased to support their growth so they can continue to thrive, build on their great work to date, and build a stronger Toronto.”

A “Vital Idea” is a program or project that is currently in operation and has a solid track record of success in making Toronto a better place to live, work, learn and grow. The Vital Ideas grant stream is unique in that it provides grants for strategic activities beyond direct programming. The investment in these strategic activities is meant to be a one-time investment in building the capacity of not-for-profits.
