Core services of the York-Durham Aphasia Centre

Group programs for adults with aphasia or other acquired communication disorders. These are long-term, community-based programs with communication and psycho-social components. Highly trained volunteers and students in partnership with a team of speech language pathologists and communicative disorders assistants help clients develop new strategies for communication within an aphasia friendly environment.

Support for caregivers and family members of our clients. Monthly caregiver groups are offered at specified program sites only. However, staff is available at all program sites to consult with family members of clients.

Other services include:

Information and referral
Workshops for families and clients
Volunteer training
Consultation and training for community agencies
Raising advocacy and awareness

Clients

Programs of the York-Durham Aphasia Centre are heavily centered on community focused communication groups. As a result, criteria for client eligibility include:

  • Clients must have aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysarthria or social communication disabilities due to stroke, brain injury or brain illness.
  • Clients (with assistance) must set communication goals and work in a mutual aid group format for at least three hours a week.
  • Clients should require the services of speech-language pathologists and communicative disorders assistants. This will be reviewed on an on-going basis.
  • Clients must be able to attend a community program safely.
  • Clients must be 18 years of age or older.
