March of Dimes Canada is now offering its dynamic CE program in Mississauga

Conductive Education (CE) is a unique program that combines education and rehabilitation to help increase the independence and self-confidence of children and adults with physical disabilities. Having offered CE at its head office in Toronto for over ten years, March of Dimes Canada has now expanded the service to include a site in Mississauga.

Conductive Education is a learning strategy for children and adults with motor disabilities. Conductors, who are specially trained instructors, help individuals gain the skills needed to improve mobility and self-confidence. Participants develop problem-solving skills and techniques, body control, mobility and communication. By incrementally regaining physical mobility and self-sufficiency, individuals build self-esteem and are motivated to continue working on areas of self-improvement. The innovative program has been especially beneficial to children with cerebral palsy, and adults who have multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, acquired brain injuries or have survived a stroke.

Don Boglis, a stroke survivor, has been participating in CE for the past two years. Says his wife Anne, “CE is a fantastic program. The staff who facilitate the program are well-educated, patient and compassionate. They are teaching Don to become independent.”

Brent Page, Conductive Education Manager is excited by the enthusiasm of local parents and organizations for the program. “From speaking to parents and companies in Mississauga, we knew that there is a huge need for this program here,” he says. “It is my hope that the program is able to provide service to everyone in Southwestern Ontario who could benefit from it.”

Conductive Education offers no cure, but for adults and children with motor-based disabilities, the successes encourage many to lead more active, independent lifestyles.

“Life after a stroke can be very difficult - this program means the world to me and Don and has given us hope when we thought all was gone,” says Anne.

CE classes will be held at 1075 The Queensway East, Unit #15.

The program is also offered in Toronto, London and Woodstock in Ontario and Halifax, Antigonish and the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia.
