Adult Programs

Adult Conductive Education®

Our adult classes provide peer support and encouragement to all participants by grouping people with similar disabilities, abilities and goals.

Tasks deal with the development of motor skills, including walking, transfering, speech and breathing, and help improve control over involuntary movements.

Classes can also include instruction on coping with communication difficulties and behavioural or attention problems.

Classes geared to specific conditions include:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
Emphasis is placed on developing skills for each individual's challenges. Which may include: reducing and coping with spasticity, improving control of movements, and learning techniques to deal with incontinence. Techniques are taught to conserve energy and reduce fatigue.

  • Stroke Survivors
Emphasis is placed on re-learning skills to use the parts of the body affected by the stroke and on re-developing body awareness and balance.

Participants work to enhance coordination and to improve control. Survivors at all stages of their rehabilitiation can benefit.

  • Parkinson's Disease
Conductors have a detailed understanding of how Parkinson's disease affects everyday living, as well as the side effects of the drugs used to control the condition.

The program works on challenges the individual is facing now and at a preventative level. CE helps participants develop techniques for managing daily activities at all stages of the drug cycle. This includes improving control in areas such as walking, tremors, directional change, posture, and balance.

The program also addresses life skills such as coping with crowded environments, verbal and non-verbal communication and handwriting skills.

  • Cerebral Palsy
Classes are available for all ages. The classes are designed to meet individual needs.

  • Acquired Brain Injury
This program is designed to meet the highly individualized needs of each participant. It focuses on areas such as regaining lost mobility, sensation and control, and addresses communication difficulties and behavioural or attention problems.

Tasks relate to improving posture and coordination, reducing spasticity, enhancing control over involuntary movements, achieving better balance, and enhancing expressive and receptive language skills.

  • Other Conditions
Conductive Education® programs are also offered for adults with any form of neurological disorders.
