Since the 1950's, rheumatologists and orthopaedic surgeons from Toronto and other centres have volunteered their time to travel to communities such as Cochrane, Hearst and Kirkland Lake, to care for people who do not have specialists in their communities. One such supporter was Dr. Douglas Dale McCarthy, who passed in April of 2007.
Every year the Northern Medical Clinics save hundreds of northern Ontario patients the time, trouble and expense of travelling to distant cities to see medical specialists and receive treatments.
Supported by our specialists, volunteers, host hospitals and various local organizations, the clinics have also received funding from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care through its Northern Health Programs and Planning Branch.

What do our patients say?
In a 2003 survey of patients in the Northern Medical Clinics Program, ratings for clinic staff, registration, examinations and the overall experience were overwhelmingly positive -- 98% of patients reported they would recommend the clinics to others, and 85% reported that they received what they expected.
