Vancouver Retrofit Vehicle Initiative

March of Dimes Canada, a charity that provides programs and services to children and adults with disabilities, will be donating up to $15,000 to help a family or individual living with disabilities in British Columbia retrofit a vehicle to become accessible.

Vehicle modifications allow people living with disabilities the freedom of mobility, access and community participation that so many of us take for granted – but they can be prohibitively expensive, and out of reach for those with limited or fixed incomes. The funding from March of Dimes Canada will be given to an individual or family who desperately needs a modified vehicle, but cannot afford it on their own. Eligible applicants must be residents of British Columbia, with a physical disability from an accident or illness that impedes mobility and substantially restricts activities of daily living and participation in the community.

“We are very excited to support a local individual or family living with a disability acquire a retrofit for their vehicle that will make their life a little easier,” says Mary Lynne Stewart, Director of Fund Development and Communications for March of Dimes Canada. “A similar grant was given at Rock for Dimes in Halifax in November, 2013 with great success, so we have tied our initiative to this fundraiser and hope to help families across Canada.”

Having a modified vehicle will make a life-changing impact on the selected recipient, removing or minimizing a life safety risk by providing transportation to receive necessary medical treatment. As well, the vehicle could help the recipient maintain or obtain full employment, have the chance to pursue their education and improve access to the community.

“Can Am Mobility is truly excited and honoured to be a sponsor of March of Dimes Canada's retrofit vehcile initiative in 2014. The retrofit will provide the lucky recipient with an enhanced freedom of living,” says Ed Stang, Certified Mobility Manager for Can Am Mobility, which will be providing the retrofit.

Interested candidates can find the application guidelines and forms at

The application deadline is February 14, 2014.

The retrofit will be awarded to the selected recipient at March of Dimes Canada’s annual Rock for Dimes fundraiser, taking place at the Red Room Ultrabar, February 22, 2014. More information about this battle of the bands fundraiser can be found at
