L.I.F.E. Mississauga Receives Grant for Fourth Year

March of Dimes’ Learning Independence for Future Empowerment (L.I.F.E.) Program receives $25,000 Pendle Fund Grant from the Community Foundation of Mississauga

March of Dimes Canada is thrilled to announce that for the fourth time, it is the recipient of a grant to help support the growth of its L.I.F.E. Mississauga program. The L.I.F.E. program helps young adults ages 18 to 45 living with disabilities to develop the skills required to achieve independence. The program provides participants with a learning environment to expand their social and professional skills while practicing the daily responsibilities of adulthood.

L.I.F.E. offers in-class and community-based learning activities, which focuses on the needs of each individual and their personal goals, including instruction on financial literacy, relationships, goal-setting and employment preparation.

On June 9th, 2015, L.I.F.E. will be breaking ground on a new, fully-accessible community garden, with support from the Community Foundation of Mississauga, Peel Living, and other individual donors. The garden will feature a raised garden bed that all L.I.F.E. participants can use throughout the growing season.

The L.I.F.E. Mississauga program began in April, 2010. Participants in the program have demonstrated significant growth in life skills, social integration and employment readiness. With support from past grants, L.I.F.E. Mississauga has expanded; adopting a new curriculum and adding new challenges for participants. The program includes four major components: Life Skills Workshops, Social Outings, Transit Training, and Adapted Sports/Recreational Outings.

Most young adults have challenges as they transition into adulthood, but those with disabilities can also face physical and social barriers to participation in their home, school, work and community. Over 14.3% of Mississauga's population identifies as having a physical, developmental or non-visible disability, and face disadvantages or barriers to employment and other community participation.

The Pendle Fund at the Community Foundation of Mississauga Grant will allow even more Mississauga-area participants to benefit from this program. To date, $115,000 has been donated by the Community Foundation of Mississauga to support L.I.F.E.

March of Dimes Canada gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Pendle Fund at the Community Foundation of Mississauga, a registered charitable public foundation serving the people of Mississauga,” says Mary Lynne Stewart, Director of Fund Development and Communications for March of Dimes Canada.
