The Voluntary Sector Reporting Awards (VSRAs) is Ontario’s award program for best charity annual reports. On Friday, February 6th, 2015, 15 finalists competed in five categories for the chance to win a prize of $5,000.
This was the fourth time that March of Dimes Canada has been a finalist, and the second time the charity won the VRSA, in the category of National Charities.
"If you want to know who some of Canada's best charities are, then all you have to do is look at the VSRAs. We honour the best charity annual reporting. These are charities that have excelled at transparency and accountability. Congratulations to all our winners," said George Boland, Associate Director of the CPA-Queen's Centre for Governance, which organizes the VSRAs every year in partnership with the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario.
The awards, now in their seventh year, recognize Canada's best non-profit annual reports. New expanded rules allowed national and international charities across Canada to enter the VSRAs, as long as those organizations have a significant presence in Ontario. More than 140 charities were nominated. Grant Thornton is the event's exclusive accounting firm sponsor and the National Post the media sponsor for the program.
March of Dimes Canada was once again recognized for its transparency in financial reporting and exemplary Management Discussion and Analysis, which received 111 points out of 100. The report itself was granted an overall score of 92. The breadth, depth and clarity of the reporting were commended and it was also lauded for providing a self-assessment with a grade assigned to each program area.
“The process of participating in the VRSA program has enhanced our agency’s understanding of quality, accountability and clarity in annual reporting,” says Andria Spindel, President and CEO of March of Dimes Canada.
