Eighth annual Rock for Dimes fundraiser to raise money for Calgary families living with disabilities.
Three bands will take to the stage at Flames Central on Saturday, February 7, 2015 to raise an estimated $25,000 for people living with disabilities.
The Bitchoo Men, No Reply and F.O.G. will be participating in a corporate battle of the bands to determine the title of Calgary’s best, all in support of March of Dimes’ programs and services. Kent Hehr, MLA, musicians Glenn Solomon, Marv Matthews, music therapist Shannon Robinson, Calgary Sun Editor Gerry Krochak and actor Yan Joseph will be on hand as the event’s judges, and Q107 on-air personality Tim Morgan will be the evening’s emcee.
All proceeds benefit March of Dimes Canada’s programs and services for children and adults with disabilities. For the first time, March of Dimes Canada is providing $15,000 to help an individual living with a disability retrofit a vehicle to become accessible.
Vehicle modifications allow people living with disabilities the freedom of mobility, access and community participation that so many of us take for granted – but modifications can be prohibitively expensive, and out of reach for those with limited or fixed income.
Through a series of competitions across Canada, the Istvan and Barbara Haas fund will grant between $10,000 - $15,000 to successful candidates, depending on region and need, towards recreational devices or vehicle retrofits. Funding comes from the estate of the late John Haas, who designated that funds be allocated to the acquisition of assistive devices, or vehicle retrofits for people whose needs are both physical and financial, and that the fund would be in memory of his late parents who were Holocaust survivors. Whenever possible, the candidate(s) will be recognized at a Rock for Dimes fundraiser in his/her province.
“We couldn’t be more excited about staging Rock for Dimes in Calgary again, it just gets better each year,” says Mary Lynne Stewart, Director of Fund Development and Communications for March of Dimes Canada. “The Calgary community is so supportive, and this has become a signature event in the city.”
This is the eighth year that the event has been held in Calgary, and it is part of a series of fundraisers that are held across Canada. March of Dimes Canada has been able to expand its program offering to Albertans living with disabilities as a result of this fundraiser.
