Ninth annual Rock for Dimes fundraiser to raise money for Vancouver families living with disabilities
Five bands will shake Red Room Ultra Bar on Saturday, to raise an estimated $20,000 for families living with disabilities. As We Divide, Doug & Shawn with BIG WIDE NORTH, The Ringtones, Deiter Dives for Donuts and No Reply will compete for bragging rights, at the same time showcasing their talents to music industry professionals.
Rock for Dimes Vancouver has raised over $100,000 since its inception to help British Columbia families living with disabilities.
On board as judges are Odds drummer Pat Steward, Dave Genn of 54-40, music therapist Sheila Lee, and actor and host Yan Joseph. Kieran Wilkie, from media sponsor 96.9 Jack FM will be the evening’s host. Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart, spokesperson for March of Dimes’ Stroke Recovery Canada® program will be the evening’s special guest.
All proceeds benefit March of Dimes Canada’s programs for children and adults with disabilities. For the second year, the charity will be donating up to $15,000 to help a family or individual living with disabilities in British Columbia retrofit a vehicle to become accessible. The presentation will be given during Rock for Dimes.
Hailey Graham is the grateful recipient of funding from the Istvan and Barbara Haas Vehicle Retrofit Fund.
Hailey is a 26-year-old Nanaimo resident living with spastic quadriplegia from cerebral palsy. Haylie is non-verbal and requires full-time support. She is a very active young woman, participating in power wheelchair soccer and attending a number of community events through a local social club. However, her current van is over 12-years-old and unreliable, frequently breaking down. Hailey’s mother Michelle is afraid of letting her travel too far, fearing that the van will stop working, and her daughter will end up stranded.
The family started a fundraising campaign towards the purchase of a new vehicle. The contribution from March of Dimes’ funding will help the family acquire the modifications once the van has been purchased, so Hailey can once again participate in the sports and activities she loves.
“This is such a huge boost to our overall fundraising goal,” says Michelle Graham. “We’re just floored by this generosity and knowing that we will soon have a reliable vehicle for Hailey is amazing. I constantly worry about her safety in our current van, and Hailey will be able to continue her activities, which so improves her quality of life,” she continues.
“We are very excited to support Hailey and her family with this retrofit that will make their lives a little easier,” says Mary Lynne Stewart, Director of Fund Development and Communications for March of Dimes Canada. “A similar grant was given at Rock for Dimes last year with great success; so we have tied our initiative to this fundraiser and hope to help families across Canada.”
