Annual battle of the bands raises money for local March of Dimes Canada programs
March 1, 2016
If you weren’t at the Red Room Ultrabar on Thursday, you missed the showdown of the year.
Five local bands – The Beattones, No Reply, The Rhythm Method, Deeter Dives for Donuts, and The Falcon Band - demonstrated their musical chops to a packed house and a panel of celebrity judges, and supported March of Dimes Canada while they did.
The difficult task of deciding on a winner fell to Dave Genn (guitarist for 54-40), Katherine Graff (music therapist with Note by Note Music Therapy) , Big Backyard & Co (band comprised of Doug Holt and Gordy Brown), and Jeff Dawson (writer, producer, engineer, and mixer).
It was close, and all the bands were terrific, but Rhythm Method edged out the others by raising both the roof and some money. The band won bragging rights plus the coveted Rock for Dimes trophy.
Altogether, the event raised and impressive $10,000, all of which will benefit MODC programs for children and adults with disabilities. The money will stay here in Vancouver, supporting Stroke Recovery Canada® and Conductive Education®.
‘Vancouver is always a terrific event,’ said Mary Lynne Stewart, National Director of Fund Development and Communications for MODC. ‘It’s a kind, generous city, and that’s why we can continue to serve Vancouverites living with disabilities.’
For the first time, MODC also provided 6 deserving winners with a customized tablet through its Assistive Mobile Technology Program. Daniel Giglio, Marleigh Schindell, Amber Morel, Richard Spencer, Gurneet Grewal, and Jana Husseini will all be able to customize their tablets with apps to help them communicate and live more independently.
‘Technology is opening up so many doors for our consumers. Most of us use tablets for fun or convenience, but they can also be pathways to independence,’ Stewart added.
Our very generous national sponsors are: Airgo, Long&McQuade, Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund, Agency 50, SRABC, 96.9 Jack FM, CIS, Singleton Urquhart Legal Counsel, CanAm Mobility, and Expand-a-Sign, and RedRoom Ultrabar.
