The Stroke Recovery Program supports stroke survivors find their way after stroke. The Program Assistant plays an active role in engaging with participates to gain the most from the program. The purpose of the program is to provide stroke survivors the opportunity to connect with other stroke survivors in the community and enjoy social interaction and peer support. The Program Assistant will have a direct role in supporting those with communication disabilities to actively engage in program activities.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Assist in leading and actively participating in weekly program sessions
- Collaborate with Program Instructor in the preparation and planning of fun and engaging activities for the group to participate in
- Provide participants with community resources to enhance engagement
- Utilize a variety of supportive communication strategies that support participants with communication challenges to participate fully in program activities
- Complete room set up and clean up before and after session
- Adhere to COVID protocols and requirements for group environments
- Respect others’ privacy, wishes, values, rights and beliefs
- Record and report volunteer hours on a monthly basis
- Adhere to all MODC and After Stroke BC policies, procedures and guidelines
Staff Liaison: Volunteer Engagement Coordinator
Time Commitment: 2-3 hours per week. Program runs every other Thursday 12:30 to 2:00 pm
Length of Term: Ongoing; estimated start date June 8, 2023
Location: Abbottsford Recreation Centre; Abbottsford, BC
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- 19 years of age or older
- Lived experience as a stroke survivor, caregiver, or someone with knowledge of/experience with individuals affected by stroke and communication disabilities
- Pursuing Speech Language Pathology or related education
- Ability to take initiative
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to take and give verbal and/or written direction and follow through to complete assigned tasks
- Reliable, understanding, collaborative and respectful
- Prior volunteer experience an asset
- Team-oriented, personable
