The experience of living with a disability is different for everyone. But many people share the desire for practical, everyday independence, with choice and control over how they live their lives. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to accessibility. Each person’s needs are unique. Some situations require adding grab bars to a space; others might entail extensive structural alterations, like adding stair lifts, a wheelchair ramp, or replacing a bathtub with a roll-in shower. Successful remaining and aging in place requires a person to have a safe, affordable, and accessible home that meets their needs and reduces any risk of injury to their caregivers.
