How to Calculate Required Financial Contribution
Applicants whose after-tax income falls between the minimum and maximum limits for their household size (see Table A) may need to pay part of the cost.
Step 1:
Find the Residual Family Income:
Subtract the Allowable Household Net Income from the Household Net Income.
Step 2:
Use the table below to find which Residual Income Range your result falls into.
This tells you the Required Contribution Percentage.
Step 3:
Calculate the Required Contribution:
Multiply the Total Cost of the Request by the Required Contribution Percentage

Examples of Required Financial Contribution
Case Study 1: Lower Limit – No Contribution Required
Applicant: Sarah
Household Size: 1 adult
After-Tax Net Income: $36,000
Outcome:
- The minimum income limit for 1 adult is $38,000.
- Sarah’s income is below the limit
Result:
✅ No contribution required.
Case Study 2: Upper Limit – Ineligible
Applicants: Alex and Jamie
Household Size: 2 adults
After-Tax Net Income: $66,000
Outcome:
- The max income limit for 2 adults is $65,000.
- $66,000 is above the 2-person limit ($65,000)
Result:
❌ Not eligible.
Case Study 3: Client Contribution Required
Applicants: David and Priya
Household Size: 2 adults
After-Tax Net Income: $60,000
Total Cost of Request: $12,000
Step 1 – Determine Residual Income:
- Income minimum limit for 2 adults = $54,000
- Residual Income = $60,000 - $54,000 = $6,000
Step 2 – Determine Contribution Percentage:
- $6,000 falls in the $5,001 – $10,000 range
→ 20% contribution
Step 3 – Calculate Contribution:
Result:
✅ Eligible, but must contribute $2,400
