Two male friends laughingAdvocacy takes a lot of internal strength and energy. That’s why it’s important to build resiliency as an advocate. 


When advocating, there are bound to be multiple setbacks. You might not always achieve what you set out to do, or it might take longer than you expected.

Of course, like needing to become advocates, people with disabilities, their families and caregivers often have no choice but to develop resiliency. In the face of many challenges and barriers, being resilient also becomes a way to survive. 

Sometimes, continuing to push forward on our advocacy goals can burn us out. Being the strongest advocate isn’t always about being resilient. It can also be about finding support and knowing when to step back and take care of yourself. 

In this section, we’ll discuss tactics for developing resiliency and self-care practices as an advocate.
