March of Dimes Canada launches adaptive driving campaign

MAKING DRIVING ACCESSIBLE TO ALL CANADIANS
March of Dimes Canada launches adaptive driving campaign

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March of Dimes Canada (MODC), the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA), and the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) have partnered on their new Adaptive Driving Campaign.

Many of us take our cars, and the independence they offer, for granted but not everyone has that luxury. For someone living with a disability, driving requires modifications to make a vehicle safe and serviceable. The result can be life-changing.

‘We don’t think twice about driving,’ says Mary Lynne Stewart, National Director of Fund Development and Communications for MODC. ‘We don’t think about the freedom and flexibility it gives us. But it’s a big deal.’

Paralympic athlete and MODC ambassador Unstoppable Tracy, for instance, got her first full-time job after MODC helped her modify a van so she could drive it independently.

‘It was amazing,’ Tracy says. ‘Everything changed. It opened up my life. I remember driving home from work, and I had this craving for fish and chips. I really wanted fish and chips. And suddenly I realized I have the van. I can just go get fish and chips.

Then there are the particular challenges presented by driving in the winter. The campaign also includes some useful tips that everyone can use to stay safe on the road.
