In Memory of Elizabeth Lounsbury: 1943-2026

April 16, 2026

It’s with tremendous sadness that we mark the death of Elizabeth Lounsbury, a former vice chair and long-time member of March of Dimes Canada’s (MODC’s) Board of Directors, who passed away on March 29 in Sudbury, Ont.

Elizabeth was a dedicated and passionate advocate for the rights of people with disabilities in Canada and a respected leader within the community. She served in many volunteer and advisory roles throughout her life, including leading peer support groups and advancing accessibility and inclusion at the local, provincial, and national levels.

A strong and unwavering voice for people experiencing post-polio syndrome, Elizabeth made sure the perspectives of people with disabilities were reflected in our strategies, programs, and advocacy. Her insights strengthened our understanding of client needs and reinforced our commitment to meaningful, person-centred support. She was recognized with MODC’s inaugural Changemaker Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2022 for her extraordinary contributions to our organization.

“I will always remember Elizabeth for her kindness, thoughtful counsel, and steady presence,” said MODC President and CEO Len Baker. “Her unwavering belief in community and the dignity of all people lives on in the work we do today, tomorrow, and in the future.”

Elizabeth joined MODC’s board in 1997 and served for a remarkable 24 years, bringing wisdom, integrity, and lived experience of disability to her work. She helped shape our organization’s direction and deepened our influence on many levels.

Elizabeth’s leadership extended across a range of organizations and initiatives. She served for many years as chair of the Accessible Advisory Committee to the City of Greater Sudbury, as chair of Post-Polio Canada, and as an advisor to Elections Ontario.

We will miss Elizabeth. Our thoughts are with Elizabeth’s family, friends, and community at this time.
