March of Dimes Canada has received a grant of $25,000 from the Age-Friendly Communities Grant Program, administered by the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors and Long-Term Care. The funds will support March of Dimes Canada’s After Stroke program in Nova Scotia.

Over 1,700 people experience a stroke in Nova Scotia each year – that means almost four to five people have a stroke each day. Stroke survivors and their families have reported that the transition home from the hospital is extremely stressful and challenging. Many face significant difficulties in identifying and accessing supports and services available in their communities.

The After Stroke program will help to fill this gap by giving Nova Scotians an easier way to navigate and more compassionate experience along their recovery journey from hospital to home and back out into the community.

“We know that stroke survivors and their families across Nova Scotia need support,” says Rebecca Bourbonnais, Regional Manager, Community Programs & After Stroke at March of Dimes Canada. “We are grateful to receive these funds, which give us the opportunity to expand our After Stroke program across the province – making our personalized stroke recovery services available no matter where they live and what stage of recovery they are in.”

After Stroke is a personalized recovery program that helps survivors and their families navigate the path forward after a stroke. We deliver person-to-person support, educational opportunities, and innovative community-based programs that provide a connection to humanity, hope, and life after stroke. www.afterstroke.ca
